Cataracts

Cataracts form when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. This frosted layer over the eye becomes larger over time, which can lead to blurry vision and eventual blindness. Although cataracts usually appear in both eyes, they may not develop at the same time or be the same in each eye. They cannot spread from one eye to the other. People above the age of 60 are most at risk of developing cataracts.

Common symptoms

Cataracts are not painful and are not accompanied by redness or irritation. However, they can cause vision to appear blurry, hazy, or misty. Lights may feel too bright or glaring, and it may be more difficult to see in low light or at night. Colours may also have a faded appearance. People who wear glasses might feel like their lenses are dirty even when they are not.

What causes cataracts?

Age-related cataracts develop due to normal changes in the eye. When you’re young, the lens of your eye is clear but after age 40, the proteins in the lens of your eye start to break down and form cataracts. There are some factors that can increase the likelihood of developing cataracts including:

  • diabetes
  • a family history of cataracts
  • smoking
  • eye injury
  • prolonged use of steroids
  • excessive alcohol consumption
  • too much time in the sun

Treatment options available

If left untreated, cataracts can get worse over time and affect a person’s ability to carry out daily activities, such as driving and reading. Surgery may eventually be necessary to remove and replace the affected lens.

If surgery is needed, we can promptly refer you to public and private specialists, including well known private hospitals like UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford and UPMC Aut Even in Kilkenny. Cataract surgery is safe and can help restore vision.

To detect and monitor cataracts as early as possible, the importance of regular eye exams cannot be overstated. You can book your eye exam check up online.
