Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs when the front of the eye, the cornea or sometimes the lens in the eye are irregular in shape. The curvature instead of being spherical like a football is more oval in shape like a rugby ball. Astigmatism causes blurred or distorted vision as a result.

Symptoms of astigmatism may include:
- Blurred vision
- Headache
- Squinting
- Eyestrain/fatigue
Glasses or contact lenses can be used to treat astigmatism.
It may take a period of adaptation for your child to adjust to their glasses as everything will appear a slightly different size and shape. It can take the brain a while to adapt to this new image size and shape. Most children adjust really quickly, however if your child is having any difficulty, use the glasses doing their favourite task. Preferably whilst doing a stationary task, as initially the glasses may cause some dizziness whilst walking or running with them on. Increase the wearing time from there. Reward charts can also be helpful, using age-appropriate rewards.
Caring for your Glasses
It is best to use both hands when taking the glasses on and off, as if not, it can cause the frame to become strained over time.
Your child’s glasses may become loose over time, please if this happens, please drop in to us so we can adjust your child’s frame so that they fit correctly. This is particularly important, to ensure that your child is looking through the glasses.
When the glasses are not in use the safest place for them is with the lenses facing up in the case.
Regular eye examinations are essential to monitor your child’s vision, and since the eye is growing, the strength of glasses required will change over time. Book your child’s appointment online today
